About the Event

Our June program will be a tribute to William Day and Mi'kmaw guide and interpreter, James Glode. William Day was a great friend of the Museum and Archives. As a meticulous researcher, this is based on what may have been his final research project entitled, "How Mi'kmaw Guide James Glode Met Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse". In 1876, on the North American Great Plains, members of the Mi’kmaw and Sioux nations participated in, or witnessed, events that culminated with the Battle of the Little Big Horn River in southern Montana, U.S.A. This program investigates oral and pictorial ways in which the two nations preserved the histories of these events and will be presented by David Sollows.

LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

The Yarmouth County Museum and Archives, owned by the Yarmouth County Historical Society stands on Mi’kma’ki (Mi’kmaq Territory) and supports culture, education, and arts on this land. We strive for meaningful partnerships with all the peoples of this province as we continue to live and work here. Through the Peace and Friendship Treaties, which the Mi’kmaq, Wolastoqiyik (Maliseet), and Passamaquoddy Peoples first signed with the British Crown in 1725-1726, there was no surrender of lands nor resources. Agreements within these Treaties outline a path for the ongoing relationship between Nations in mutual respect.
